Sunny Dazed

Finally went camping for the first time this year (I know, I camp all year in the RV that I live in) but it was the first campfire of the year, and by the sounds of things, just in time. There was no campfire ban all summer and it started the day after we got back. Last summer it was all summer long so we didn't have a campfire until October's Thanksgiving weekend at Goldstream.

Sunny Daze is an unofficial campground with huge areas to claim as your own for the weekend. We took the Back 40 next to the river and the swimming hole. It also had a portapotty and garbage/recycle bins. Oh, and let's not forget a killer view of the river from the site. We had 9 for Saturday and 14 for Sunday - it was amazing. We had perfect weather, a meteor shower each night (I saw 7) and the babbling water day and night. There were lots of trees for shade and sunny patches to bask in. The water was awesome to swim in and hang out on a floater for hours. We did group cooking for the birthday breakfast and supper. I did breakfast with fruit and a pot of bacon, while another friend J. Did eggs Bennie from scratch. It was delicious! Then M. And J. each did a supper portion. M did philly cheese steaks in the fire, while J. grilled some crocodile sliders, kangaroo sausage and kangaroo burgers. I think we were rather spoiled for camping!

There were 3 traditional nylon camping tents, my friend C's homemade yurt tent (my term) that was huge, a hammock tent, and my RV. There were two other hammocks, one big canvas one that was pretty sweet for a swing, and my netted one I bought in Cambodia - awful and only big enough for tiny people as it felt like a sausage casing to me. I think it even got left behind there. I didn't care that I forgot it. My friends who only came for the day ended up sleeping over in their van with two kids.

Most of us have war wounds of one kind or another - I got bit on the inside of my lip by an asshole wasp that had crawled into my drink can. It hurt quite a bit until I iced it. It swelled a fair bit too. I also broke a toe on my left foot, clamouring around the campfire late at night in bare feet. Nice and purple it is..I also have a few scrapes on my legs, not sure how, but it was a lot of climbing around to get from the riverbed to the campsite where all our stuff was. It wasn't far, but treacherous in the dark of night. I couldn't find my flashlight - where it has disappeared to, I have no idea, but now I need a new one. I couldn't use my phone as it was playing music on my Bluetooth speaker at the campfire, so it would have been an asshole thing to do each time I wanted to go get something, ha ha.

We all went swimming in the swimming hole and had a turn on the floaters. Lots of alcohol, food, and other recreational items kept us busy and happy all weekend. It was glorious...
